Paragliding in La Palma |
||||
| It is not something that we tried, but La Palma is rumoured to be one of the best places in Spain and the Canary Islands to paraglide and you'll cover some spectacular scenery with the opportunity to soar freely from the top of a volcano right down to the Atlantic ocean.
The winter months from the end of September to May offer the best conditions but the island generally has over 300 flyable days per year so most months are suitable. Paragliding itself is an inexpensive way to fly and can be exhilarating and fun and appeals to people of all ages. The total weight of the paraglider, reserve parachute, harness and helmet is generally under 20kg and the whole package can be rolled up into a specially-designed rucksack that the pilot can carry. It is advisable to take special precautions when flying in La Palma. Experience is essential and it's important that you understand the weather conditions which can be changeable at all times of the year. Inexperienced pilots should always use a reputable paragliding school as the winds are often strong and can change rapidly during the day. Paragliding, Parasailing, Parascending and Hang-gliding? Paragliding is not the same as parasailing, parascending or hang-gliding and the differences are explained below. Paragliders launch by foot from cliffs, hills and mountains or alternatively from winching at an airfield. Parasailing and parascending are basically the same and are usually found on tourist beaches with large parachutes being pulled behind a boat or vehicle. A hang-glider is a more weighty, structured frame which needs a car and roof-rack to be transported. The hang-glider will partly collapse into a bag that is around 15ft long, weighing in at 30 – 60kg.
